La Place della Morretta is one of the few holes in the dense urban center of Rome.
Historical maps show that the lot was once full. Although there are several parks on the other side of the river, there is
very little pedestrian life because of high road traffic and few routes of access. The Casa Della
Citta is a building that becomes a through way that connects the 'old', dense city center to the
'new' more open city, and offers a place of gathering and learning in the heart of the city.

The design fills up the entire lot by working with the existing conditions on Via Guilia, but the
interior is developed with its own heirarchy of volumes that float above the ruins below and begin to
spread apart and offer itself to the very different condition on the other side. A person moving
through the building experiences the horizontal movement from density to expanse, but also the vertical
layers from ruin to bridge, to the green roof above.
